Much was expected of Franklin Roosevelt when he entered the White House. “Happy Days Are Here Again” had been the Democrats’ campaign song. But this was the worst depression in the nation’s history. No community was without its failed businesses, closed banks, and bread lines of the unemployed. Gray despair cloaked the entire nation.

Roosevelt talked to the people by radio in “fireside chats.” (There was no television then.) His words were soothing and confident. “This great nation will revive,” he declared.
